Small things often contribute to the bigger picture…a guest blog

Pam Armstrong, a lovely new friend of Team Boo, shares what has helped her during lockdown…

During lockdown 2020 I’ve been grateful to still be able to go out for walks. I like walking. Also grateful to sit out in my garden. It’s nothing fancy, but it’s pleasant and it is being outdoors. I sit out on sunny or grey days, I like to feel fresh air. I notice things when I’m walking, I’m quite observant, but never really paid much attention to what is happening in the garden, sure I see birds, but I mean really not giving attention to the small things, and the small things often contribute to the bigger picture. Like insects, does anyone really value their worth?

It was when I was sitting outside doing relaxing breathing exercises that I noticed the bees, buzzing to and fro, so many of them on the wild flower patch grown from seeds. Some of the seeds were from packets, just randomly scattered last winter, some had reseeded from the summer before, probably thanks to the bees, nature’s pollinators. But the effect of the purple flowers with the huge red poppies is beautiful, and so are the bees. Not only do they pollinate, they produce food for us, honey is healthy and they help maintain the ecosystems and are relevant to global issues.

Because of the calming breathing exercises and reflecting about bees, I aim to collect more seeds from plants on my walks and see what surprise beauties will grow symbolically in that wild flower patch in the future.
