The traditions and celebrations of autumn and winter help us pass the cold dark days in light and laughter and togetherness. This year many of us are going to miss out on things we have enjoyed and taken for granted our whole lives and it might feel as if the next few months will be empty and uneventful.
Team Boo and our friend Erica, a nurse at Southport Hospital, have put our heads together to help you create a ‘Winter Wonder List’ of things to look forward to whilst our options are limited. The free, downloadable template includes prompts to plan things that will help you to stay healthy and stay connected to others – as well as plenty of free space for your own ideas.
Erica came up with her own ‘lockdown list’ when it became clear that our lives might be restricted in some capacity for a while.
“Faced with a second lockdown and shorter, colder days, I found it helpful to start focusing on what I could do rather than what I couldn’t do. This really takes your mind away from feeling anxious about infection rates or any other worries you may have.
Some of the things on my list include a family afternoon tea in a box – it gets delivered to your doorstep and you’re supporting a local business. I’d like to climb a really big mountain and also plant some bulbs for spring – to believe in the future. I’ve ended up with lots to look forward to and all of a sudden, winter doesn’t seem as long!”
The Winter Wonder List idea might not be for everyone, but it’s right up Boo avenue. Gratitude and joy are powerful tools in challenging times but you’ve got to work at finding them – some days this is easier than others, but little things like this can be really help us keep going.
It’s not easy to make plans at the moment and a lot of people have had to cancel things, so it’s nice to be able to prepare for activities we can almost certainly do. Let’s not write off the rest of the year – life is too precious!
