Protecting Your Mental Health in the Face of Bad News and Global Events

Protecting Your Mental Health in the Face of Bad News and Global Events

When the World Feels Heavy

The world can feel heavy sometimes.
Whether it’s global conflict, political unrest, or climate anxiety, it can be hard to stay grounded.

At Boo Coaching & Consulting, we know that even the most resilient among us can feel overwhelmed by what’s happening around us. That’s why, this World Mental Health Day, we’re joining the Mental Health Foundation in focusing on how to protect your mental health when the world feels uncertain.

Why This Matters

You don’t need to be directly involved in a crisis to feel its impact. The constant stream of distressing headlines and social media posts can take a toll on our mood, focus, and energy.

It’s okay to care deeply about what’s happening in the world and still protect your own peace. Looking after your wellbeing isn’t selfish — it’s how you stay strong enough to keep showing up for others.

Practical Ways to Protect Your Mental Health

Here are some simple, evidence-informed steps (inspired by the Mental Health Foundation’s guide) and our own experience supporting leaders and teams:

  • Limit exposure to distressing news – Choose when and how often you check updates. Avoid the late-night doom-scroll and give your mind time to switch off.

  • Take small, positive actions – Doing something practical, like volunteering, donating, or helping a neighbour, helps you regain a sense of purpose and control.

  • Connect with others – Talk about what’s worrying you with trusted friends, colleagues, or a coach. Connection helps us process difficult emotions.

  • Prioritise rest and recharge – When life feels uncertain, focus on what you can control — your routines, rest, and boundaries.

  • Focus your energy wisely – As we often remind our clients: If we cannot control it, let go of it — give that extra energy to yourself instead.

As we often remind our clients:

If we cannot control it, let go of it — give that extra energy to yourself instead.

Our Commitment

At Boo, we believe in mentally healthy workplaces for all.
That means helping leaders and teams create psychologically safe cultures where people feel safe, seen, and supported— even when the world feels uncertain.

This World Mental Health Day, we encourage every organisation to take one small step:

  • Start the conversation.
  • Check in on your people.
  • Lead with compassion.
