World Mental Health Day 2019 – an update from Becci & Lily

Today is World Mental Health Day.

I have been reflecting on what helps us to stay well at work and how we can properly care for our mental health. I’m not going to tell you what to do – you know yourself the best and who are we to tell you what works for you? I really don’t enjoy being told what to do!

I struggle to manage my anxiety levels at times and I know that good quality sleep and a walk with great friends helps me a lot.

I talked about this with my daughter Lily (aged 9 years) this morning over breakfast. Lily has struggled with anxiety and found a way to manage this through mindfulness and talking openly about her feelings at school – she even set up a club which helps other children to feel comfortable talking about their worries. #ProudParent

Anyway, I asked her for her advice and here is what she said…

“It’s OK to talk about your mental health, everybody has tough days”

Sounds simple yeah?

I know it’s not that simple but we must start somewhere. Here are my promises…

1. I will talk openly about how I am feeling with my family and with my team to remove barriers to mentally healthy conversations
2. I will ask twice when somebody says “I’m fine”
3. I will ensure that all our programmes connect back to wellbeing
4. Team Boo will all train as Mental Health first aiders in the next 6 months

Check in with people, ask twice if necessary, be brave and start a conversation.
