It’s almost the most magical week of the year… for John Hacking of Greater Manchester Poverty Action, Living Wage enthusiast.
6th November marks the start of Living Wage Week in the UK, and as autumn arrives, we call this the ‘Hacking unpacking’ – when John gets dusted off and gears up for a week of events around fair pay.
Boo has been Living Wage accredited since 2016. That same year a study was published by the University of Middlesex, looking specifically at the benefits of Living Wage accreditation for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Over 99% of private sector businesses are SMEs and yet it’s often the bigger companies that feel more eager and able to make that commitment to fair pay.
According to the Living Wage Foundation, 94% of accredited organisations of all sizes report that the decision to become a Living Wage Employer was good for their business.
For SMEs, the 2016 study found that benefits included an improved reputation, higher employee motivation and productivity, lower staff turnover and cost savings. The report included practical ways to overcome the challenges of implementing the Living Wage, including strategies for absorbing the cost of paying it. You can read it in full here.
Although most employers pay the Real Living Wage because doing so fits with their ethics and values, there is also an expectation that the business will benefit.

At Boo we believe that paying our team a fair wage is the right thing to do. We’d like to help to drive up numbers of accredited Living Wage employers in our hometown of Bolton. So we’ve joined forces with The Octagon Theatre and Greater Manchester Poverty Action, to host a business-to-business networking event.
