Earth Day – “Don’t underestimate your power”
Earth Day – “Don’t underestimate your power”

“It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living. – David Attenborough

Nature is a common value amongst the members of Team Boo. We acknowledge that nature contributes to our happiness and wellbeing in so many ways, but we also recognise that we are not always as consciously kind to it in return as we could be. Here’s a quiz on the impact nature has on our happiness.
We can avoid thinking about our individual sustainability because it seems difficult – not least because it feels like there’s not much we can do.
But.. we all know things that we CAN do. Perhaps we need motivation, accountability, support.
Earth Day – celebrated on April 22nd each year – is a good prompt for us to invest some time, energy and resources into reviewing what we’re already doing to tackle our environmental impact and considering what more we could do by changing our mindset.
“Don’t underestimate your power.”
You can do this through getting a coach, or coaching yourself. We already know that coaching can help you to:
-
Change your mindset
-
Change your behaviour
-
Work towards goals
-
Overcome your personal barriers and challenges
This applies to sustainability as much as it applies to advancing your career or training for a marathon.
Why is this important? Because for one thing, we are consuming the Earth’s resources far more quickly that they can regenerate. The ‘Earth Overshoot Day‘ marks the date when humanity’s demand for ecological resources and services in a given year exceeds what Earth can regenerate in that year. In 1970, Earth overshoot day worldwide was December 29th. In 2022, it was July 28th. Just taking into account the uk, this year it will fall on May 19th.
Here are 12 coaching questions that you can use to work towards your sustainability goals this year:
-
How much control do you have over this situation?
-
What is working well right now?
-
What might you do differently?
-
What resources do you already have? Skills, knowledge, attributes, time, enthusiasm, money, support
-
What obstacles do you feel are in the way and how could you overcome them?
-
Who can help you?
-
What are your options to take action?
-
What steps could you take right now?
-
On a scale of 1-10 how committed and motivated are you to doing this?
-
What could you do to raise your commitment nearer to 10?
-
How will you know when you have succeeded?
-
What are the implications of doing nothing?
