5 Questions to Ask Yourself – International Day of Happiness

It’s International Day of Happiness, but what’s the point of celebrating happiness – you’re either happy or you’re not, right?
Well, that depends. There’s happiness as a state of wellbeing and pleasure in the moment, and there’s happiness as an average over time – a happy marriage, a happy childhood, a happy life.
Although I am the Happiness Ambassador, I didn’t choose happiness as one of my core values.
To me, happiness represented a surge of emotion and implied seeking or acquiring something I hadn’t already got. I chose contentment and inner peace over the temporary high of happiness.
Often, people will seek coaching to help them increase their happiness in some way. When they achieve their goal they expect it will bring about greater emotional wellbeing. The best goals are ones that lead to longer term happiness – the happy average – the state of inner peace and contentment with ourselves and our lives as they are.
Previously we’ve looked at tried-and-tested ways of increasing your happiness levels; practice gratitude, spend time in nature, shift your mindset, nurture connections with others, prioritise kindness, listen to uplifting music, even fake it until you feel it! We know it’s hard to tell someone else how to be happy. Instead, we can encourage them to be analytical, introspective and accountable for their own happiness, whatever that looks like for then.
Let’s use the International Day of Happiness to check in on ourselves, with 5 coaching questions.
