Reflections on Kindness

Kindness Hits Differently When Things Are Hard

This week, I’ve been reminded — not for the first time, and hopefully not the last — that kindness really hits differently when things are tough.

In the messiest, most uncertain moments, when deadlines loom, inboxes overflow, or life throws something unexpected your way, something remarkable happens: people show up. Quietly, without fuss, without expectation. They offer help. They check in. They lift the load in small, powerful ways.

These acts of kindness aren’t loud. There’s no fanfare. Often it’s a simple, sincere “How can I help?” or a message that lands exactly when you need it most. And somehow, just like that, you feel a little more held. A little less alone. A little more hopeful.

Why Kindness Matters (Especially Now)

At Boo, we talk a lot about building healthy, happy workplaces — cultures where people can thrive. And kindness isn’t a fluffy extra. It’s the foundation.

Kindness in the workplace isn’t just about being nice. It’s about taking time to understand each other’s experiences. It’s about empathy, care, and recognising the unique strengths each person brings. When kindness is embedded into our everyday ways of working, it creates:

  • Greater belonging

  • More supportive teams

  • Better communication

  • Trusting relationships

  • A flourishing culture

  • And a genuine sense of purpose

The ripple effect is real — from reducing stress to increasing engagement and retention, kindness strengthens not only people, but the system they’re part of.

I’ve Felt That Support Recently

Over the past few weeks, I’ve faced some personal and professional challenges. The kind that test your resilience and shake your confidence a little.

But what’s stood out most isn’t the difficulty — it’s the kindness. Colleagues, clients, friends — people who’ve sent messages, made space, or simply reminded me that I don’t have to carry it all alone. It’s made a difference I can’t easily quantify… but I can deeply feel it.

And it’s left me thinking about how we can all show up for each other, especially when the wheels are wobbling.

Kindness in Action: What Helps

If you’re looking for small, meaningful ways to bring more kindness into your work and life, here are some ideas we’ve shared in our training and team sessions:

  • Begin meetings with a round of appreciations

  • Celebrate the win of the week — big or small

  • Plan or encourage random acts of kindness

  • Use tools like the Tree of Life to explore how people are feeling

  • Record and share Magic Moments

  • Send a postcard of appreciation

  • Give clear, kind, constructive feedback

  • Invest in personalised opportunities for growth and development

And most importantly? Make it part of how you work — not a one-off gesture, but a value you lead with every day.

A Gentle Reminder

To anyone facing challenges right now: I see you.

You might feel like you’re carrying too much, holding it all together with a smile. Please know — you’re not alone. There are good people out there. There is support. And sometimes, it finds you when you least expect it.

Kindness might not fix everything, but it softens the edges. It reminds us of our shared humanity. And it gives us the strength to keep going, together.

So maybe take this as a gentle prompt:
Who’s shown you kindness recently — and what difference did it make?
And if you’re able — pass it on.
